Westwood Barn, Modern Barn Conversion
This was one of the first Barn Conversions under the newer permitted development rule for conversion of agricultural buildings into domestic use. This large relatively modern barn was designed to create a contemporary and spacious family home. The existing trussed roof was replaced with a new engineered structure providing a usable first floor, and rooflights installed above two central light wells bringing daylight into the centre of the building. The design creates a new structural central which houses the main utilities of the house as well as the main circulation space, while keeping the main living areas to the perimeter. The complex structural re design of the existing barn allows for a simple yet imaginative reinterpretation of the original building.
